Submission to God

 Submission to God

Matthew 6:9-13

Throughout this plan, we’ve been learning how to pray from Jesus. He has been our guide and His prayer has been our map.

We began with adoration, communicating our deep love and respect for God. Then, we learned how to intercede, praying for God to show up in the lives of others. After that, we petitioned God to give us what we need. Last week, we discovered the power of confession, exposing the dark parts of our lives to His purifying light.

As we close out this journey, we are going to learn the power of submission. Submission isn’t a very popular or fun word today, but it is vital for developing an intimate relationship with God.

What is submission? Submission is choosing to accept the authority of someone else.

When we begin a relationship with Jesus, we are choosing a life of submission. Because from that moment on, our life is not our own. We have become a new creation in Christ. We have chosen to commit our lives to God and the good news of Jesus. This can’t happen without letting go of our old way of doing things and stepping into God’s way of doing things.

Which is what the final part of this prayer is all about. Asking God to give us the strength to live submitted to Him and not our own sinful desires. And asking Him, as the one true authority of the world, to rescue us from the attacks of the evil one.

Pray…

Our Father, you are holy and just. Everything you do is good and true. I trust you. I worship you. I submit my whole life to you. And I do it gladly because I know that a life submitted to you is so much better than any other kind of life. Teach me to better serve you and better love your people. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read…

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.Matthew 6:9-13 NLT

Consider…

Jesus closes out this prayer by telling us to ask God to not let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. What does that mean? Well, the first part is all about us not giving in to our own sinful desires. Desires that may benefit ourselves but will disadvantage others. How do we not yield, or submit, to our temptations? We yield to something else. We submit to someone better. We humble ourselves and choose to trust God to give us the strength we need to resist temptation. And we ask Him to rescue us from the evil one.

Sin and satan want to separate us from God. Death and darkness want to snuff out our light. They want to turn us against our Father. And, if we aren’t prepared, then instead of living submitted to God we will be led astray by our enemy.

But there is good news. Our God is always with us and He is for us. When we call out to Him, He hears our prayers and will show up in our time of need to rescue us.

Where are you being tempted? If the enemy were to try and sabotage your relationship with God, where would He attack you? How can you begin asking God to protect you from these temptations and attacks?

Practice…

Pray to God by submitting to Him. Humble yourself. Honor Him as your king. Trust that He loves you and wants what’s best for you. As you do, begin asking God to help you live your life wholly committed to Him. Ask Him to strengthen you where you are weak and to keep you safe from the attacks of the enemy.

As you do, imagine you are talking to God face-to-face. Because, at its most basic level, that’s really what prayer is: talking to God.

When you’re ready, pray to your Father using Jesus’ words, “Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy… don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:9,13 NLT

Listen…

Create space to experience God’s presence by getting quiet, getting alone, and asking Him to speak. Start by setting a timer for five minutes.

Next, ask God to speak to you.

When you get distracted, because you will get distracted, bring your focus back to God by repeating the first words of this prayer: “Our Father…”

When the timer ends, thank God for the time you got to spend with Him, then head into your day looking for opportunities to better serve Him and serve others.
