Don’t Drift Away

 Don’t Drift Away

Matthew 6:9-13        Colossians 1:15-23

Following Jesus may not always be easy, but it is always worth it. Because of His sacrifice on the cross, our sins are forgiven and our relationship with God has been fixed. The work that God started then is still going on in the world. And He isn’t going to stop until all things are made new. This is the hope we have in Jesus. The confidence that, someday, our resurrected ruler will return to finish what He started. Until He does, we will choose to submit ourselves to God so that we can stand firmly in the truth of the Gospel and not drift away from the good news we’ve been given.

Pray…

God, thank you for sending Jesus to die in my place. I am eternally grateful for the gift of salvation. Help me never take it for granted. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus so that I can stand firmly in the truth you have revealed to us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross. This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it. Colossians 1:19-23 NLT

Consider…

Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, we have been reunited with God. We have been welcomed into His Kingdom, adopted into His family, and brought into His very presence. As a result, we have been called into an entirely new way of being human. A way defined by love, grace, and holiness. But, temptations and attacks will come. This is why the Apostle Paul is challenging us to stand firmly in the truth of the Gospel so we do not drift away from God. Because, if we aren’t paying attention, our old thought patterns and our spiritual enemy will tempt us to follow after our selfish desires instead of our risen savior.

Think about the moment Jesus changed your life. What was going on in your life at that time? What did He rescue you from? What purpose did He rescue you for? How does reminding yourself of those things help you to stay rooted in your faith?

Practice…

Pray to God by submitting to Him. Think about the life change you’ve experienced because of Jesus. Remind yourself of all the ways you’ve been transformed by the Gospel. Ask God to help you stay committed to Him and not fall back into your old way of living.

As you do, imagine you are talking to God face-to-face. Because, at its most basic level, that’s really what prayer is: talking to God.

When you’re ready, pray to your Father using Jesus’ words, “Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy… don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:9,13 NLT

Listen…

Create space to experience God’s presence by getting quiet, getting alone, and asking Him to speak. Start by setting a timer for five minutes.

Next, ask God to speak to you.

When you get distracted, because you will get distracted, bring your focus back to God by repeating the first words of this prayer: “Our Father…”

When the timer ends, thank God for the time you got to spend with Him, then head into your day looking for opportunities to better serve Him and serve others.
