What is God’s Will?

What is God’s Will?

Matthew 6:9-13

Jesus invites us to pray heaven to earth—to ask that God’s kingdom would come and His will would be done. But what is God’s will? What are we really asking when we pray that His will would be done?

Let’s investigate that question together.

Pray…

Heavenly Father, you are holy. You are love. It’s what you do. It’s who you are. Teach me to trust you more than I trust myself. May your will be done in me and around me today. Please make me more like Jesus. In His name, amen.

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:9-13 NLT

Consider…

What is God’s will? That’s a question we have probably all wrestled with, at least on a personal level—what is God’s will for me and my life? The good news is that from page one of the Biblical story, God answers that question loud and clear.

See, God didn’t have to create the universe. And He for sure didn’t have to make it brimming with goodness and beauty and life. But He did, because He wanted to. He wanted to craft a space for His attributes to be clearly seen and for Himself to be intimately known—by us. God’s will is to be united with His creation, to partner with us to work for the advancement of shalom.

Shalom is not just peace—it’s the way things should be. Shalom is the joining together of God, humanity, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and goodness.

This is God’s will. And this is God’s will for you, personally.

How does understanding this change the way you think about prayer? How does this change the way you see yourself and your purpose? What would it look like to partner with God, in prayer, today?

Practice…

Pray through the Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6 today.

As you pray for God’s will to be done, pray through the lens of understanding that God’s will for the world and for us is that we would experience shalom—that we’d be joined with Him in justice, fulfillment, and goodness.

Listen…

As you finish praying today, create space for God to speak to you. Set your timer for five minutes and just be still and quiet, humbling yourself before your good King.

Ask Him to speak to you.

When you get distracted, come back to Jesus by praying the Lord’s Prayer, slowly, line-by-line, listening for the Holy Spirit to comfort and challenge you to take a step of obedience today.
