Aramaic: The Language of Jesus and Why I Am Reading It

Aramaic: The Language of Jesus

Aramaic is a descendant of Hebrew that was widely spoken in the Middle East in the centuries leading up to the birth of Jesus. In fact, Aramaic was Jesus’s native language — the one he used to deliver his teachings to his disciples. It is still spoken by a few scattered communities in the Middle East today.

Bible Manuscripts exist in Aramaic, and how those compare to other Bible Manuscripts such as those in Hebrew and Greek. Which are the oldest? Which are the best?

First of all, did you know that the oldest DATED Bible manuscripts in existence are in Aramaic - not in Hebrew, and not in Greek, and not in Latin?

The oldest DATED manuscript of the Old Testament, for instance, is an Aramaic Manuscript of the Old Testament.

It is important that these are DATED manuscripts. If a manuscript is DATED, it means there is a colophon and a history which TELLS YOU when the manuscript was written. Otherwise, you only have someone’s OPINION of when the manuscript was written.

Opinions are just that - opinions. But a DATED manuscript is like finding a nugget of gold.

A DATED Bible manuscript is always better, because you are on solid ground, and you know when it was written. And the oldest DATED Manuscripts are ALWAYS those in Aramaic.

And when we come to the Aramaic Manuscripts of the New Testament, it gets even better. The British Library in London holds literally hundreds of Aramaic (Syriac) Manuscripts dating from the early few centuries A.D. onwards, including hundreds of manuscripts of the New Testament. These, too, are the oldest DATED Bible manuscripts in the world.

There is even evidence of a DATED manuscript of the Aramaic New Testament as far back as 78 A.D. Amazing!!

So why do I read the Peshitta - Aramaic Holy Bible in Plain English? Well, that's an easy answer as it was before any modern Bible today, so there's no change to verses or words or taking out nouns or pronouns to fit their agendas. It's the real word.
